How to survive the heat with a child?
Too much sunlight, especially between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., can be very dangerous for babies. It increases the risk of dehydration and sunburn. How can you survive the heat with your baby?
Every sensible parent puts their child's safety first. In hot weather, babies should be dressed lightly and airily. It's best to invest in natural fabrics (cotton, linen), which allow for free air circulation and wick away sweat. Even if your baby isn't directly exposed to sunlight, it's essential to protect their skin with a sunscreen with a sufficiently high SPF (preferably 50 SPF). A thin cloth scarf is a good idea. In hot weather, you can safely avoid socks, sleepsuits, and jackets. These can further overheat the baby's delicate skin and cause heat rash.
It's important to remember to stay hydrated regularly. Most moisture is lost through sweat, but water levels in the body need to be replenished. Dehydration is particularly dangerous for young children and, in extreme cases, can be fatal. Babies whose diet is not yet expanded and are exclusively breastfed should be breastfed as often as possible.
Under no circumstances should you cover the stroller with cloth diapers, blankets, or other fabrics. This will increase the temperature inside and reduce air circulation.
When going for summer walks, it's a good idea to choose areas with plenty of shade. Therefore, the best option is a walk in a local park or forest, where you can easily escape the strong sun. If possible, it's better to choose early morning hours (between 10:00 and 11:00 AM) or afternoon hours (after 3:00 PM). High noon is when temperatures are highest, which increases the risk of heatstroke and dehydration.
Parental safety is as important as the child's
Last but not least, take care of your own safety. Just like with your baby, it's essential to stay hydrated, use sunscreen with a high sun protection factor, wear a hat or cap, and wear breathable clothing.
