Which bathtub is best for a newborn? — What to consider when choosing a bathtub with a stand

Bathing a small child in their first days of life is quite stressful for parents. A bathtub with a stand is one of the basic elements of a newborn's first layette. Above all, it should be practical and safe. What should you consider when purchasing one? Which features should you pay attention to?

A large selection of bathtubs and other bath accessories can be found in our Kokosek store.

Baby bathtub with stand – which one to choose and is it worth buying?

When putting together a baby's first layette, many parents wonder whether to buy a bathtub with or without a stand. A stand provides more stability, which increases the baby's safety during bathing. Furthermore, the baby's height doesn't force parents to assume a bent-over position, which can lead to back pain.

Foldable bathtub for newborns - advantages of using it

The stand folds and unfolds very easily, ensuring the bathtub's portability. In large bathrooms, the bathtub can be left standing ready for use at all times, while in smaller spaces, it can be easily stored away in a convenient location.

What should you consider when purchasing a bathtub with a stand ? Primarily:

  • the amount of space in the bathroom/apartment (foldable ones made of silicone will take up the least space),
  • contoured to ensure comfortable positioning of the baby in the bathtub,
  • quality of materials,
  • depth,
  • the child's age (it is worth buying a model that will allow you to bathe your child up to 3 years of age).

What does bathing do for a baby?

Bathing is primarily intended to ensure proper hygiene for the baby. It's an activity performed with extraordinary care and gentleness. In the first weeks of a baby's life, it can be particularly stressful for parents. However, with time, practice becomes more effective, and bathing becomes a pleasant ritual for both the baby and the mother and father.

What should you remember when bathing a newborn?

The ideal water temperature for a toddler is 37 degrees Celsius. Such a warm bath soothes various tummy troubles. It also has a calming and relaxing effect before bed, making it easier to fall asleep. However, remember that baths shouldn't be longer than about 5-10 minutes. The water temperature in the bathtub cools very quickly. You can check it with a special water thermometer or, as our grandmothers used to do, with your elbow. Besides the bathtub and thermometer, you'll also need towels (preferably made of certified cotton, muslin, or terry cloth with a hood), as well as gentle toiletries . A cup for washing your hair and scalp can also be helpful.

Some, however, recommend postponing a newborn's first bath until approximately two weeks of age. Babies are born with a natural protective skin barrier, which shouldn't be washed off immediately after returning from the hospital. Vernix amniotic fluid has additional protective properties against pathogens that can be acquired in a hospital setting.
