"Nobody teaches you how to be a parent. You have to step into the role of mom or dad straight away, and then find your own way in a world full of stereotypes, prejudices, and contradictory information. And at the same time, you have to cope with everyday life in a home where children are struggling with their developing sexuality, learning their boundaries, and building their self-esteem." - Anja Rubik
81% of parents would like to learn more about how to talk to their children about sexuality, 45% admit that they do not know how much a child at a given age should know, 44% notice their child's embarrassment and are unable to cope with it.
The book "#SEXEDPL. Growing Up in Love, Safety, and Understanding. A Guide for Parents" It was created to help those who want to consciously support their children in the various stages of their development and maturation. The publication aims to help parents prepare for all conversations related to their children's developing sexuality at different ages, to share knowledge about the changes that occur in both the body and mind of children, to break taboos, and to combat harmful stereotypes surrounding adolescence, human rights, and sexuality. Questions collected by the SEXEDPL Foundation across Poland will be answered by the country's leading specialists in the development of children's sexuality at various age stages. Additionally, the handbook will include chapters for and about parents of LGBT+ children and children with physical disabilities.
The book is a record of conversations between well-known and well-liked parents and a selected specialist, divided into 5 age groups covering children from 1 month to 18 years of age, designated in accordance with current sex education standards. They shared their concerns Joanna Okuniewska, Kasia Błażejewska-Stuhr and Maciej Stuhr, Ola and Michał Żebrowscy, Martyna Wojciechowska, Marcin Prokop, and Magda and Piotr Jacoń . Among the experts were: Basia Baran – psychologist and sexologist, Alicja Długołęcka – educator, doctor of humanities and sex educator, Agnieszka Stein – psychologist with over twenty years of experience in supporting children and parents, Margaret Iwanek – psychologist, sexologist and sex educator, Iza Nuderek – psychologist, psychotherapist and clinical sexologist, as well as Michał Pozdał – sexologist and psychotherapist.
A photographer was also involved in the project Stanisław Boniecki, who took the photos of families from all over Poland included in the book.
The spectacular success of the first book published in cooperation with WAB Publishing House and the SEXEDPL Foundation, founded by Anja Rubik ("#SEXEDPL. Anja Rubik's Conversations on Puberty, Love, and Sex," sold over 200,000 copies) confirmed the great need for genuine sexuality education in Poland, free from stereotypes and judgment. Since then, the Foundation has received numerous contacts expressing the need to expand their knowledge. Among them, a huge number of parents have reached out for help, asking specific questions, seeking advice, and ideas on how to approach the topic of sexuality, self-acceptance, and the emotions of their children of various ages.
These questions inspired the creation of another book on the topic of sexuality, this time dedicated to parents.
"#SEXEDPL. Growing Up in Love, Safety, and Understanding. A Guide for Parents" is a non-profit project. WAB Publishing House and many of the people involved in the project have waived all profits from the book. All profits from sales will be donated entirely to the SEXEDPL Foundation.
